EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL FILE SERVERS

Following are examples of three different File Serves that can be purchased. Each of these file servers are sufficient to operate the CreditUnion2000 system. The major difference lies in the addition of features to protect you from loss of data and operating time due to possible hardware failure.

You will purchase the File Server via the Internet or from your local computer store or distributor. Your actual cost may vary depending upon your hardware source, number of terminals and network requirements.

To determine the "number of terminals" on your system, include all PC screens used as terminals and one modem to communicate with ERS. ( SYBILs, Home Banking interface, Shared Branch interface, dedicated printers and printers attached to PC auxiliary parallel ports do not count).

NOTE: These examples DO NOT include PCs to be used as terminals, printers or network expense.

TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW

OPERATING SYSTEM

Tells hardware and software on a PC how to work together. On the CreditUnion2000 system one PC is designated as a file server and it must use Linux Redhat operating system. All other PCs used as terminals must be running on Windows 95 or above.

LINUX

An industry standard Operating System.

FILE SERVER

A high speed computer that stores programs and data shared by other terminals on a network. We strongly suggest that your Linux file server NOT be used for other PC functions (i.e. local area network file server). The disk space available on the file server will be needed when adding new features, and provides more space for storing information (i.e. reports, statements, picture data base, etc.) from your ERS CreditUnion2000 software.

DUAL (REDUNDANT) POWER SUPPLY

A second power supply that automatically takes over if the first one fails.

HOT SWAP

One piece of hardware (power supply, disk drives, etc) can be pulled out and another one put in while the PC is still operating.

TWIN (MIRRORED) DISK DRIVES

Information is written on two (2) hard drives at the same time. If one drive should fail there is no loss of information or time. Simply hot swap the failed drive while using the data stored on the other drive. The replacement drive will automatically duplicate the remaining good drive within a couple of hours without any down time.

Ashell

A program written for us by an outside party which allows our existing software to operate on the Linux system.

There is a one time charge to license Ashell for each port on your network, and an annual Ashell support

license based upon the number of ports. (This is paid via ERS to the developers of Ashell.)

ZTERM FOR WINDOWS

A software program that tells your computer how to display the information from our system on your monitor. ZTERM for Windows will have all of the features of a normal Windows program (i.e. windows can be resized and minimized to the Windows Task Bar without closing the program. You can print to any network printer set up on your PC (not just the printer attached to your PC). Underlines and colors are properly displayed when operating in Windows. Each copy of ZTERM for Windows has a registration code which ties it to the terminal upon which it is installed. Each terminal must have its own registered copy of ZTERM for Windows.
